I would suggest proceeding by conference paper and conference attendance. It is only in recent years that conference papers and journal articles have so much, simply, become duplicates one of the other. Conferences were very much to float ideas and preliminary findings to get feedback from one's peers and then proceed. Theses and journals were the province of the "fully-baked" article - correct academic process. I still use conference papers and conference attendances in that way, including that I introduce much more speculative connections and conclusions in those, and most certainly will introduce preliminary conclusions from as yet incomplete data sets.
